Monolingual Blogging by Bilinguals

November 4th, 2006

One of the things that sucks about being bilingual is that, unless everyone you know is also bilingual, when blogging you automatically render yourself incomprehensible to half of the people you know.

Frankly, if this blog were about readership, instead of a place for me to vent my thoughts, I would be writing this in Japanese. The vast majority of people I know speak no English. But writing in Japanese is hard for me; not because Japanese is difficult, but because I can’t get the exact nuance that I want, because I have to go through some circuitous routes to express things that can be far more simply expressed in English, and because different languages are good for expressing different things, and my rambling thoughts are primarily in English.

I’ve tried writing a bilingual blog, with each entry in both languages, and it’s work. And since my readership hovers between 3 to 4 people at the best of times, there’s just not enough incentive to put in that much work, which leads to an empty blog.

So here I am, writing in a language that most people I know can’t understand. Things would be so much simpler if I were in a monolinguistic situation.
